Old-Fashioned Oatmeal

This is a great recipe for a cold and snowy day like this.  makes 2  1/2 cups.

2 cups water
1  1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1/3 cup raisins (or dried cranberries or a mixture of both)
A pinch of salt (I left out)
1 teaspoon vanilla
 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Maple syrup or brown sugar to taste

  • Bring water to boil and add oats, raisin and salt.
  • Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes. (I sometimes need to add more water because the water cooks down before the oats are cooked)
  • Stir in vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Top with maple syrup or brown sugar.
